Day 110 (5q11.2-5q12.1): pelota

Day 110 has 36 protein-coding genes (browser view), including PELO (pelota homolog, Drosophila.)

This is a gene that was named and discovered in fruit flies in 1993, when looking for male sterility genes. The name presumably comes from what discoverers saw under the microscope when pelota was disrupted: “abnormally large nebenkerne form in late spermatocytes.” The nebenkern is a ball of mitochondria bundling together in sperm.
