GJA1 is a connexin, a protein that forms gap junctions between cells. The mRNA made from the gene has a special feature: an IRES (internal ribosome entry site). This structure in the RNA encourages ribosomes translate and make more protein from the gene faster than usual, when stimulated by stress. This may be important for making more GJA1 during heart stress or in the uterus during pregnancy.
