Day 174 (Xq21.2-Xq21.33): L1, a LINE element that loves the X chromosome

journal-pgen-1003402-g001 | Genome Year

Day 174 has only 8 protein-coding genes (browser view) but lots of repetitive elements, including L1 or LINE1 elements, which are especially abundant on the X chromosome. Overall they are 17% of the human genome but 30% of the X chromosome.

LINE1 elements are a kind of non-retroviral retrotransposon – a DNA element that can copy itself and can jump into other parts of the genome, acting as a genetic parasite.
