When Chromosome 2 was formed from the fusing of two ape chromosomes, it ended up with two centromeres. One was on Day 41, which is now labeled the Chromosome 2 centromere, and the other one is today on Day 45 (browser view.) Centromeric sequences remain on Day 45 as an evolutionary vestige.
