Day 53 (2q32.2-2q33.1): two protein chaperones

Day 53 has 26 protein-coding genes (browser view), all after a gene desert in the morning, including the genes for two chaperonins: HSPD1 and HSPE1.

Chaperonins are proteins that hold on to other proteins and make sure that they fold correctly. This is especially important when cells experience extreme conditions, which is why these proteins’ names start with HSP (heat shock protein): they were discovered because cells ramp them up during heat shock experiments.
