Day 54 (2q33.1-2q34): four genes for crystallins, enzymes exapted to make lenses

Day 54 has 66 protein-coding genes (browser view), including four genes for gamma crystallin proteins: CRYGA, CRYGB, CRYGC, and CRYGD.

Crystallins are a great example of exaptation. These proteins originally had other functions but were copied and co-opted to use in the lens. As eyes evolved in parallel in different species, they chose different proteins to use as crystallins.
