Day 57 (2q36.3-2q37.1): the UGT1A@ locus, choose your own starting point

Day 57 has 71 protein-coding genes (browser view). Look at the very end of the day and you’ll see a pileup of overlapping genes – this is UGT1A@ complex locus (UDP glucuronosyltransferase 1 family, polypeptide A cluster).

UGT1A@ is a great example of alternative splicing and alternative promoter usage. Your cells can decide to use nine different starting points at UGT1A, which will all end up starting the protein with different sequences with different functions, but with the same ending sequence. These functions are so different that they are considered nine different genes.
