BBX is a transcription factor that turns genes on and off during development of the nervous system. Its name comes from the fact that it is a member of the Sox family of proteins. Sox genes, in turn, are named for the portion (“box”) of their sequence that makes them similar to each other: the “SRY-related box”. SRY, a sex-determining gene, was the first member of the family discovered.
